BURBANK City – Personal Story of one of the lawyers in the Network:
I know that many of you grew up listening to “Late Night” with Johnny Carson, and for those of you who did, you will remember how Johnny always – sarcastically – referred to “Beautiful Downtown Burbank” … because the NBC Television Studios were located in Burbank, California, and because Johnny – at least – did not think that Burbank was a very cool place to spend his free time.
But actually, as someone who lived for two (2) months in the high-rise Holiday Inn in Downtown Burbank, during my Divorce, I can honestly say that it is, in fact, a pretty nice place to live and work. While I was at the Holiday Inn, all of the flight crews of Southwest Airlines stayed at the Holiday Inn, when they had a Los Angeles layover. How shall I say this? … I was looking forward to meeting as many Southwest Airlines employees as possible ….
But actually, even more interesting is the fact that large groups of kids, chaperoned by their Moms, of course, stayed at the Holiday Inn for months, as they were auditioning for upcoming NBC Television Shows. This wasn’t a one week effort, on their part … they literally had no choice but to devote three or four months to the project. Every Friday evening, the kids would perform at the Holiday Inn, just for fun … and yes, they were all incredibly talented.
There are numerous Government offices in Burbank, including three Burbank Courthouses, and the many professional offices that go with them. There are tons of Burbank restaurants, and lots of shopping, all a stone’s through from Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles. In the 2010 Census, Burbank had a population of 103,340 people, but it is considerably more today.
Frequently, Burbank is referred to as the “Media Capital of the World, because of its being near to Hollywood, and because of the many media and entertainment companies with headquarters in Burbank, including The Walt Disney Company, Warner Brothers Entertainment, Nickelodean Animation Studios, Burbank Studies and Cartoon Network Studios, just to name a few.
Of course, Burbank also has a busy airport, which is not only the “hub” for Southwest Airlines, but also Lockheed-Martin’s “Skunk Works,” which produced some of the most top secret airplanes, including the U-2 Spy Planes that flew over the Soviet Union, and were instrumental in discovering what the Soviet Union was up to in October 1962, just prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Interestingly, the City of Burbank was named after David Burbank, a New Hampshire-born DENTIST and Entrepreneur who gave up his Dental Practice in order to establish a successful and sprawling Sheep Ranch there in 1867 !
