“Hollywood” is the name of famous neighborhood in the middle of the City of Los Angeles, California. Hollywood is known all around the world, as the home of the American Movie Industry, and in fact, does include several of America’s most historic Movie Studios. The name “Hollywood” is also used to describe the entire United States Film Industry, and it has even spawned a number of derivative slang terms, most notably, “Bollywood,” which is used to refer to the rapidly growing Film Industry of India.
Historically, the very first reference to “Hollywood” was in 1870, when it was just a small, inconsequential neighborhood. In 1903, Hollywood was incorporated as a Municipality, and shortly after that, the American Film Industry “sprouted” and then grew rapidly. By then, America had a very substantial group of creative writers, authors, and artists, eager to try something new.
Southern California offered the mild, Mediterranean Climate that was perfectly suited to year-round outdoor filming. Los Angeles was growing very rapidly, with the influx of people being fueled not so much by the Film Industry, but first by the Gold Rush, and then by the Oil Rush, as Oil Wells were drilled all over the Los Angeles Area, many of which are still pumping oil today. After the Oil Rush, came the phenomenal growth of California agriculture, and then the growth of California’s Ports, including Long Beach and San Pedro.
With so many new people, came a lot of new ideas and new ways of doing things. Today, Hollywood is booming, both as a location for Movie Studios, but also as a World-Wide Tourist Destination. From dozens of foreign countries, Tourists come to Hollywood in order to see famous landmarks like the Chinese Theatre and the star-studded Hollywood Walk of Fame, Wrigley’s Believe-it-or-Not Museum, the Hollywood Bowl, and even the Hollywood Sign on the hillside above Hollywood. I cannot even recall the number – there have been so many – of friends and relatives that have come to visit me here, and the first words out of their mouths have been, “take us to see the Hollywood Sign.” Each and every time, I’ve told them, there’s really nothing to see … just a cheap, ordinary sign on a dusty hillside … and yes, believe it or not, I have never taken any of them to see it!
Much more interesting would be tours of Paramount Pictures, 21st Century Fox Studios, the Dolby Theatre, Sony Studios, and Universal Studios Amusement Park. Of course, the Tourists want to visit Disneyland as well, and our many gorgeous beaches.
In Hollywood, Tourists can choose from dozens of Comedy and Improvisation Clubs, Bars, Nightclubs, and Restaurants serving every type of food imaginable.
Professionally, Hollywood is a great place to find Doctors, the best Plastic Surgeons and Top Personal Injury Lawyers. But don’t expect them to dress in suits and ties, since Hollywood is a “cool,” “funky” place, with a lot of … shall we say, “unusual” people.
Every year, Hollywood is known for one of the biggest, wildest parades anywhere – the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, LGBTQ Parade. In Hollywood, everyone is welcome, no matter who you are. It’s a “crazy” place, but I’ve lived here for twenty-five (25) years, and everyone seems to get along … really !
