Most of us have heard of the great California “Gold Rush” of the 1840’s, the discovery of Gold kicking-off a series of major events that led to the phenomenal growth of California, to California Statehood, and ultimately (currently) making the California State Economy the Sixth (6th) Largest of the world’s Nations, if California were independent!
But far fewer people realize that the great California “Gold Rush” began in Santa Clarita. In 1842, Francisco Lopez made the first “documented” discovery of Gold in California, and that was in what is today the City of Santa Clarita. The event of Lopez’ discovery has been recorded in Mr. Lopez’ 1842 Mining Claim, which was issued by Governor Juan B. Alvarado. The discovery was made in Placerita Canyon, the scene of the filming of many of Hollywood’s early “Western” films.
It has been a long, dusty road since then, during which the City of Santa Clarita has been booming. Since the City of Santa Clarita is actually part of Los Angeles County, and serves many of the functions of a Suburb of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, it is commonly referred to as a “Boomburg,” meaning a Suburb that is “Booming,” meaning that it is growing by leaps and bounds.
Currently, the City of Santa Clarita is the Fourth (4th) Largest City in Los Angeles County, and the Twenty-Fourth (24th) Largest in the State of California. There are many new businesses opening as the city is growing quickly. Even Personal Injury Lawyers are moving in from the crowded cities in California. Shopping Centers and new housing developments are predominately visible throughout the area. Santa Clarita is also a great place to live, and in 2006, Santa Clarita was ranked by “Money” magazine as the 18th of the top 100 places to live, in the entire United States.
You’ve probably heard of the “Six Flags – Magic Mountain” amusement park, which is located just outside of the City of Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita was incorporated in December 1987, as the union of four unincorporated communities, Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus and Valencia, which were all part of the former Rancho San Francisco.
Today, if you drive around Santa Clarita, you’re driving on brand new highways, roads and streets, with well-designed and stylish shopping malls, golf courses, garden apartments, restaurants, hotels and professional offices. Santa Clarita has top-notch Hospitals and Medical Centers, is expected to soon have campuses of several colleges and universities.
